Lovely Dark and Lonely One

Soprano Dr. Marti Newland sings Harry T. Burleigh's art song "Lovely Dark and Lonely One," accompanied by Kamel Boutros. Burleigh set the Langston Hughes poem as the text of the song. It was Burleigh's last art song, published in 1935. When he was composing it, he wrote Marian Anderson that he composed it with her voice in mind.

Newland and Boutros performed as a part of the Harry T. Burleigh Society tribute to Burleigh's Annual Service of Negro Spirituals on Friday, March 31, 2017 at St. George's Church in New York City.
